DIY for a Fun Kids Party: Kids Hawaiian Skirt!
written by guest blogger
If your kids have been dreaming about having fun on the beach, but the weather has been a little miserable, don’t panic! You can still have an exciting beach party at home packed with fun and games.
A beach-themed scavenger hunt is a great game to play at an indoor kids party, but you’ll need a few accessories to really make your home feel like it’s full of sun, sea, and sand – like a Hawaiian skirt!
Making a Hawaiian Skirt
No beach-themed kids party is complete without a Hawaiian skirt. Luckily, it’s very quick and easy to make one with an old bag and whatever craft materials you have at home.
Here’s what you need:
- A large brown paper bag
- A length of craft fur or Christmas tinsel
- Stickers or craft accessories
To make a Hawaiian skirt ready for the big Hawaiian party, fold your brown bag so that it lays flat. Then cut through both sides of the bag from the closed bottom. Keep cutting until there’s just a few centimetres remaining at the top of the bag. Make another cut in the same way a few centimetres to the side of the first cut, and continue until you have made cuts all the way across the brown paper bag.
Now it’s time to decorate! Measure a length of craft fur and glue it around the open top of the bag like a belt (handy hint: if the opening of the bag is too big to stay up on your child’s waist, leave enough loose ends of craft fur to tie it so that it becomes a little tighter).
Finally, attach your stickers. Kids can climb into the skirt through the open end. The cuts will form loops, so make sure you help them so that they don’t get their feet caught and injure themselves or break the skirt.
Beach-Themed Party Ideas
To help give your scavenger hunt and other party games more of a beach-like feel, consider adding some decorations and serving up some thematic party foods, too. You could choose an underwater party theme with blue tablecloths, and shells. You could even make a great under-the-sea dessert using a blue coloured jelly, finished off with a chocolate fish or chocolate shell rested on the top.
Or how about an on-the-beach theme? Try crushing up some Marie biscuits onto a platter to look like sand, and see if you can make your very own beach scene from different types of party food. If you’re looking for more things to do with kids, they’ll definitely love to help out with this fun and yummy task!
If the boys at the party want to get involved in the scavenger hunt but don’t want to wear Hawaiian skirts, there’s a few alternatives that are also easy to make. One idea is to cut out some flower shapes from coloured card and use tape to attach them to the kid’s clothes to make Hawaiian shirts. Or the flower shapes could be taped onto a length of string or ribbon for a fun lei. The possibilities are endless!
So there you have it, a quick and simple idea on how to make your kids scavenger hunt even more fun! Enjoy the party and don’t forget to have fun!
